Transport to treatment

Talk to the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre staff about your transport options.

Trained volunteer drivers gift their time to provide transport to treatment centres for cancer patients.

The service is for people who do not have their own transport, or do not have family/whanau/aiga or friends that can take them regularly. Use of the service is for those with the greatest of need as assessed by the DHB cancer care service.

Patients who are having treatment may use the service for:

  • transport to and from hosptial for radiation treatment or chemotherapy treatment, or
  • cancer treatment-related outpatient appointments.

The service cannot provide transport to every appointment but fills in the gaps at times when family, friends or community networks cannot take you to treatment.

Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre staff will ask if you have transport. Tel them if you need help either regularly or from time to time, and they will contact the volunteer driving coordinator from your area with details of your appointment. You can expect to be contacted before your appointment by a volunteer driver who will pick you up from home, drive you to your appointment and drive you home.

The service is free to cancer patients.

Please note:

If for some reason the hospital has not arranged transport for you when you requested it, you should call the Cancer Society, phone 04 389 8421.

At least 48 hours' notice is needed to arrange transport.

If you do not need the pre-arranged transport please tell the Cancer Society as soon as possible.

If you have any concerns or comments about the Cancer Society's Driver Service contact us.

We value your feedback.

Carpark and Tea Room

Visit the Wellington Cancer Society at 52 Riddiford St Newtown.

The Cancer Society car park, opposite Wellington Hospital is available (on a first in, first served basis) free of charge to people with cancer that are going to outpatient hospital appointments. Please show your appointment card to our receptionist and let us know your car registration number.

Our tearoom is a place to take a break and have a cup of tea or coffee, and it’s a great place where you can wait between hospital appointments.

You can also hire Cancer Society rooms for meetings.
