Accommodation at Margaret Stewart House
Margaret Stewart House (MSH) provides you with a place to stay if you’re from out-of-town and having cancer treatment at the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre.
The house is located in the grounds of Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Wellington.
Our atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and you are free to come and go as you please.
Please note that currently there is construction on the Wellington Children's Hospital which is located behind Margaret Stewart House. This may cause noise disturbances from time to time until the building is complete.
You’ll need to ask for an accommodation referral letter (a letter saying you’re able to use this service) from your local hospital or the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre (04 385 5999 ext. 5303).
Please ask for a referral letter from your local hospital’s travel assistance clerk before booking a stay with us.
Ministry of Health funding will, usually, pay for your accommodation.
To have your stay paid for by the Ministry of Health, you will need to register with Healthpac (Ministry of Health).
Please talk to the travel and accommodation officer at your local hospital about whether you qualify for Healthpac (a fund that pays for accommodation while people have treatment).
You’ll need a note from your cancer doctor if you live in the 100km area and want to stay at Margaret Stewart House.
If you don’t qualify for Ministry of Health funding while staying at Margaret Stewart House, there will be a charge. Please ask to see our room rates.

You are welcome to have one support person/caregiver stay with you, providing they can share a room.
Children under 18 years of age cannot stay with patients or supporters/caregivers, but they are welcome to visit.
All patients staying at Margaret Stewart House need to be able to look after themselves or with the help of a supporter/caregiver.
The hospital or the Blood and Cancer Centre will send your referral letter to the Cancer Society.
When we get their letter, we’ll send you a letter letting you know about your booking at Margaret Stewart House.
Our Office hours for check-in are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4 pm. If you need to check-in at another time of day, please phone Margaret Stewart House to arrange it.

We are an easy walking distance to the treatment centre and within walking distance of Newtown shops.
Please note that there is very limited parking at Margaret Stewart House and we cannot guarantee parking for our guests and visitors.
Margaret Stewart House – Our Support
Margaret Stewart House guests are welcome to use the services at our local Society offices (just opposite the hospital) during their stay.
Margaret Stewart House and its grounds are Smokefree.
We have two part-time House Supervisors. We also rely on many wonderful volunteers to make your stay comfortable.
Power up the Margaret Stewart House
Thanks to a fantastic fundraiser initiated by the Cancer Society NZ - Wellington Division, we had solar panels installed ALL OVER OUR ROOF! This will save money and free up funds so that they can be used to provide care and services to cancer patients and families. The solar panels will save over $300,000 over the next 25 years warranty period of the panels. Thanks to everyone who contributed.
