“I’ll start in the middle, where the cancer has started, right in the guts...” And so begins businessman, comedian, author – and cancer survivor - David Downs’ remarkable book A Mild Touch of the Cancer.
David was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2017. During his treatment, he wrote a blog, published on Stuff.co.nz, as a way of keeping a sense of control in his life as he underwent several rounds of chemotherapy.
When his cancer returned despite treatment, his blogging served a new and, as it turned out, life-saving purpose. An interested reader of the blog led him to Boston to have a new type of immunotherapy: CAR-T cell therapy.
David’s book, A Mild Touch of the Cancer, is an expanded version of his blog and is both upbeat and honest. Not shying away from the realities of life in and out of the hospital, he artfully combines information with humour.
It’s not just a book for those living with cancer – it’s for anyone that enjoys an uplifting story of survival against the odds – and a good laugh.
